I'll probably go there this weekend. Last weekend I went to Botany Shop and Joplin Garden and Lawn, neither had much that I saw. I did get wall of water type things at BS 3 for $11. I got onion sets and seed potatoes today at MFA. I want to get some asparagus and a scoop of top soil.

I made a run a week ago for some good potting mix and stopped by Lowe's for zip ties; decided to check their garden area....no good potting mix but they had some potted roses in and I bought three. Mr. Lincoln, Chrysler Imperial and Gene Boerner, all highly fragrant. They were just $9 which is a very good price for potted No. 1 roses.

I haven't had hybrid teas in a few years and have lost some to RRD. I am taking the plunge again, but slowly.

I found that Hummert's had moved over a year ago so I had to make another trip to get the potting soil. I will go back in March when they get strawberry plants in. I lost all mine last year. They didn't have plants in yet when I was there.

Your perennials will have an early start Mosswitch. I've never bought any this early, not sure I've ever seen any for sale this early but maybe I'm not looking in the right place.
Is Ozark Nursery in Joplin? I need to remember to check it out next time we're around that area. My husband mentioned that he wants to see Sandstone Gardens. He's driven by it when he was headed out of state. I looked at their website and I'm not sure there's a garden there or plants for sale. Looks interesting though.

I got bundles of persimmon trees and buttonbush seedlings from MDC this year and I've planted a few of those. I didn't really plan where I was going to put them all when I ordered them so I've been wandering around the yard with shovel in hand just staring. I hope my neighbors aren't watching out the window. I'm sure I look confused. I AM confused. lol

Glenda - I wish Hummert's would quit moving around don't you? At one time I thought they were going to build a new place in Brookline and I guess they've given up on that idea. The place they're in now is kind of awkward for seed sales, not really any road frontage, and it doesn't look like a retail business when you walk in.

Christie, I told them the least they could do is put a sign out on Glenstone....something about city ordinances was the story I got. She said the warehouse part is smaller than they had before and the seed area is only slightly larger. I wonder why the move? The other building seems to be empty.

At least they are still in business. She told me to call around March lst and see what the schedule was on plants. I ordered my onions again this year from Dixondale. The bunches ended up just costing a little over $5. The more you order the cheaper they are and that price includes shipping. They send big beautiful plants.

Christie Sandstone Gardens is not a garden but they have a big patio with lots of very nice but expensive concrete ornaments. It is all arranged attractively with the soothing noise of water running - hard for me to describe but I think you would like it. I go there to look 3 or 4 times per summer. They have a few metal items outside also. Sometimes there are broken things on sale. The fountains are beautiful. I have my eye on a lady's head. She is about $100 with the stain and I am cheap so I don't have her yet. Their stuff is very nice. They have a big store with inside decorative items and a place to get tea and a snack. Nearby is the casino and we have gone there for Sunday brunch. My friend wouldn't gamble so I gave him a dollar and he didn't spend it all. He actually voted for the casinos because money was supposed to be going for schools so he is not opposed to gambling. It is interesting to walk through and the grounds have lots of plants but it isn't a garden either.

Yes. Ozark Nursery is in Joplin on N Main, just north of Tradex. Bare root roses have been shipped and are on their way, maybe tomorrow. More perennials next week. They are for sale as soon as they come in and get potted up. I believe Gayle sells the roses bare root before they get potted. Onions and potatoes are in also. Tomorrow at 1pm is a tree pruning seminar if anybody is interested.

Robert at Botany Shop told me Thursday plants won't be in until April. ! I know Atwood's sells plants in early spring. Last year I was there the same day as ripe, full, healthy canna bulbs were put out (by the each) and I'd like to buy some more.

Sam's Club will have their boxed clematis, daylilies, astilbe, etc. before too long. These are boxes with 9 or so plants in peat moss and the variety is bagged together. Everything did well.

I saw boxed stuff at Sam's today. I like to see the bulbs or plants; sometimes I open the box and look or feel them through the plastic. Oriental lilies tempt me, but since I got the cats, I haven't bought any lily bulbs. Honey is who I have to worry about now. He hasn't chewed many plants but he had a fine time rolling a black pot with plant inside that he "found" buried in mulch. teeandcee do you grow astilbe? I like it but now the best spot for it is taken up by blueberries and azaleas under the barn roof drips. It wants lots of water and I have a shallow well. Gail at Ozark had astilbe on sale at the end of summer. I didn't buy any because at the time I couldn't water what I had at home. It would be full price at this time of the year. I saw those inexpensive cannas at Atwood's last year. I like canna foliage as well as the flowers. If you dead head the flowers they are pretty. I like the variagated cannas very much but they are usually more expensive. You have to be careful of the canna virus so keep new ones away from your established ones.

Helen, I adore astilbes and have several. I have a spot under my deck where it's shady and damp all the time. I've got a few astilbes planted there along with too many slug-eaten hostas, which shall be yanked up this year if I can't do something about the slugs. I've tried everything pet-safe and lids of beer are my last try. I don't want to dose the soil with ammonia as I also have toads living in this area and don't want to hurt them.

Anyway, thanks for the sale tips. I'm always on the lookout to add to my astilbes.

Cannas came in Friday, there are several varieties of bleeding heart, daylilies, I think l7 varieties of coneflowers, and lots more. I work there doing potting and lots of plants are ready for sale! Some hostas already, several more coming including Jurassic Park and the in-demand Robert Frost. I like to plant perennials as early as possible so they are established by the time the weather warms up.

I like to plant perennials about 6 weeks before the first frost in fall. That way they have time to send out roots and then are ready to really grow by next year. If I am doing perennials from seed, I wait until all my spring stuff is out of the light stand and then I can use them for the perennials.
That way I can baby them along.

Helen, as I remember a generous box of hosta at Sam's was $14. Last year they had boxes of ferns and boxes of astilbe, which I regretted all summer I didn't buy while they still had them. The boxed hostas (3 varieties), pink cannas, and daylilies I bought a couple years ago had fabulous roots.

Saw the new cannas at Atwoods. They didn't compare to the luscious and beautiful bulbs of last year, so I didn't buy any. Mine are kept in the dark and cold under one end of the bench in the GH along with caladiums and amyrillis. But did buy Candy onion plants from Dixonville there. Was told to lightly spray with water if they get too dry, that they would be okay to plant in March. Hope so.

Hitting Sam's today. Hope they still have astilbe and ferns!

Bought 3 bags (3 plants each) of Breast Cancer Awareness astilbe at W-M the other day for $5 each. The package is very pink and I'm hoping they turn out a vivid pink as well. Everything I've bought packaged from that source has thrived here. The astilbes are temporarily potted and in the garage.

Misswitch, SEVENTEEN varieties of coneflower??!! Wow!

Yes, Wow! I counted them! There are so many varieties out there these days that it borders on the ridiculous. The hybridizers have gone crazy with coneflowers! Here's a link with a chart. Gayle doesn't have all these, but some of them. As for myself, I'm satisfied with two or three , I don't need them all.

Now, hostas, that's a different question, lol!I want all of those.
