Fruit Report

Strawberries are beginning. I picked about 2 quarts a couple of days ago and must get out when the plants are dry to pick again.

Blueberries are getting blue; covered with my shade cloth, but want to buy some netting like you suggested, Christie. I don't want to shade out any sun and the cloth I am using does. May get it later today.

Blackberries are getting a faint reddish tinge

Red Haven peaches are growing larger with a red cast to the skin already. Second tree is growing much slower

I am afraid I may loose some fruit trees to fireblight. I trim almost daily but that doesn't seem to control it. I should have used a spray from early in the season but understood it isn't always successful. I think our cold, cloudy, rainy weather created perfect environment for it.

I do hope we get a few pears but it isn't looking promising at this point. The summer apple is affected and the Grimes Golden too.

Apricots are still looking wonderful. They fall off the tree before you can pickthem. I kind of like that because I know then they are perfectly ripe. I plan to put down a few bales of clean straw on the concrete and then lock the calves out of the lot. I think sometime in late June they should be ready.

Glenda, are you dipping your pruners in bleach before cutting? I was "told" if I didnt, I would be spreading the blight, true or not, I dont know.
Pluot, Apricot, Plum, Nectarines, Peaches and Apples are loaded. Cherries are ready to be picked, but I think my Daughter and SIL are going to the river for the weekend.
Oh, and the Blueberries are loaded too!
Mowed my tame Blackberries down last fall, so if I get a crop from them, it will be late.
And just set out 2 new beds Strawberries.
I did read once that that had a "injection" for fireblight, but my old Pears survive anyhow, they too, are loaded with fruit.

But you know, I may not get any fruit, because my battle with Brown Rot!

Oh yes, I carried my little container of bleach water around with me.

I need to do some serious research on FB. I am afraid DH won't get to taste his pears this year.

I am trying not to get frustrated..........but it's not working!

I did just put up 8 quarts of strawberries that were very nice. They need to be thinned desperately this year.

Glenda, my pears are old trees, FB hit so bad about 15 years ago, we lost some of the trees center--but they just keep on producing, bushels per tree. I'm wondering if it only kills the young trees?
