apple variety advice needed

I live in NW AR and I'd like to plant two dwarf apple trees in my backyard this fall. There isn't a lot of space, hence "dwarf." Do I need to buy two different varieties for better pollination? Also, I don't care what the color the apples will be; they will be mostly for salads and baking.

Any advice as to varieties? I'd like something reliable and fairly low-maintenance (I don't like sprays)

Two varieties are best. Check with your local Extension Service for varieties that will be best for you. Here we have to fight fireblight and I goofed with my trees have two that are very susceptible.

There are no trees that will 100% perfect and disease free but some are better than others.

The University of Arkansas has an apple breeding program I believe. The link posted above has a phone number. I would be tempted to call or email them for info on newish disease-resistant cultivars and see what they recommend.
