Sounds like they're doing great Ann. I planted a Double Red Knockout this year too.
I'm not sure on the fertilizer but have read that with many plants, if they are fertilized late in the year and have too much new growth going into winter, it's harder on them to get through the winter. There might be more winter die-back if they're over-fertilized now and I think in general, too little fertilizer is better than too much.
Kaye knows a lot about growing roses in the Ozarks but I haven't seen her post for awhile. Maybe she's lurking and will join in soon.

Christie, thanks for the response. I will not fertilize them. I did not think I would like knockouts until I planted them.

Sounds like they are doing great, bunny6, and I would think that the compost would be sufficent for this year. Guess I'm going to have to try a Knockout, for sure.

Haven't been lurking for a while, trying to stay ahead of the weeds with all the rain! I agree that the compost is great for now. Let them get their roots established.

Minirose1 I like the double knockouts the best, because the blooms looks like a full rose bloom. I plan to add a double pink knockout, a yellow knockout and climber next spring. I have had not black spot or mildew problems this year.

I would have to get the double Knockout for sure as hubby doesn't care much for single roses. I've got a lot of suggestions on my post for blackspot resistant roses and am hoping to try Livin Easy, Pretty Lady, Hot Cocoa and Bill Warriner next spring.
