Got to ask, since it's thorny, do you get volunteers where the birds drop the seeds?

Christie, I've had it for many years and haven't ever had any seedlings. My soil isn't very good where it's planted so that may be why but I've never read anything about others sprouting.

I have always admired them, but heard they were susceptible to fireblight, so that put me off.

Yours is beautiful. I am beginning to appreciate the berried bushed as much as flowers.

Few years ago, my huge pears developed fireblight. I didnt know what it was, so I asked, and was told this. Also, he asked me if I had recently planted pyracantha, which I had, the year before.
Needless to say, I got rid of my pretty bushes, but not the fireblight. Since the pears were at least 30 years old before it happened, I'm sure I was to blame for bringing it in.

Yours is beautiful. My sister says the flowers smell like honey. I don't have a place for it, but I like your picture. My sister's gets scale in their broiling hot dry summers in CA, but it looked very pretty in front of a privacy fence when I was there in Oct. Thanks for your offer and the discussion is interesting.

I had a small pear tree that I bought a couple of years before I got the pyracantha and it died too. I don't think the pyracantha had fire blight. Can they cause it in other plants without having it themselves? I haven't had any luck growing fruit trees. I have a small plum and there's a large one on the line of woods that has only born plums once. It was beautiful that year, they blooms were huge.

Helen, I've never smelled the blooms of the pyracantha. I'll have to remember to do that next year.

I've seen them in books espaliered on a wall and they were beautiful.
