I like them and the little nuthatches. That reminds me to put out more suet cakes.

Do you think I should put something out for them?
Or do you think maybe they have enough to eat for now on the dead tree.
I was reading about them, it says they like the bugs in the dead trees.
Maybe I should wait until it snows and gets cold for more that a few days?

My mother likes to watch the birds. I feed birds all year. They are finding things to eat in your tree I'm sure.

I would wait until it gets colder and than put out some suet for them. I use to have a woodpecker house that I built high up on a tree and I had a two woodpeckers that live in there for a couple of years. Then they cut the forest down behind our subdivision and I never saw them again. Also, I had a little woodpecker that would sit on the window seal and peck at the glass early in the morning. He only stayed a couple of weeks, and I was glad. I got tired of being woken up. It sound like a little jack hammer.

I have started to put out both sunflower seeds and suet again. I know the birds don't really need either yet, but I want to know what's out there. (I fed all summer last year because of that awful killing freeze we got late spring) I don't usually feed midsummer. The squirrels rob the sunflower seeds and the woodpeckers abandon the suet and it goes rancid. So far this fall I have seen the goldfinches and purple finch at the seed feeder along with titmice, sparrows and chickadees, oh and cardinal. And the redbreasted male woodpecker and the female and male downy woodpecker are back at the suet. Haven't seen the yellow-bellied sapsucker at the suet yet, but most years they are there. Also saw a nuthatch at the suet.

We have a red-bellied woodpecker that comes to our feeder daily and all that we have out is just the wild bird seed mix from Lowe's. I haven't seen the Downey and Hairy Woodpeckers yet this year.
