This is an Inazuma Japanese maple. The spring and fall color is amazing. It looks like it's on fire.

Just spectacular. Is it in full sun or some shade?

It is in a fairly shaded location under a 125 year old elm. It does not get any direct sun. I have my mature trees trimmed way up for filtered shade. This is inazuma in May next to a queen of the seas hosta.

| Well now I want to see photos of the rest of your yard. That's gorgeous! I have just one Japanese Maple and it looks so pretty in the spring and fall. I don't know why, but the middle section is always orange and the outer branches have red leaves. I have posted this before but it was a long time ago.

christie, that is a beautiful one! I have never seen the picture before. I have always hesitated to plant Japanese maples. For one thing, they are expensive and another, I was afraid our hot and sometimes very dry summers would kill them.

If you don't have any Japanese maples, and want one, an inexpensive choice is acer palmatum, also known as a green j.m. See my post fall in the ozarks for a picture.

That may be what mine is. It's not a named variety. I bought it at Walmart many years ago and it was only labeled "Japanese Maple". It's waaay too close to the house but I don't have the heart to cut it down. I've tried to grow them from seed and got several to germinate but haven't been able to get them to survive for various reasons.

Don't think of cutting it down. I see J. Maples planted close to buildings often. Lendenwood Garden in Grove, OK. has several J. maples and I like the more common green ones in spring as well as any. They are pretty in spring and fall.

I hope you're right Helen. It hasn't grown any taller for a few years. I think it's topped out but I don't know what the roots are doing. We have a basement so I've wondered if it could cause the basement wall to crack. Hope not. Swmogardens - How many Japanese Maples do you have?

I agree with Helen, don't cut it down. It's beautiful. All the landscapers seem to b e planting at least one smaller tree very close to the front of new houses.
