Any ideas on how to plant everything in the seedbox?

I've accumulated alot of "keepers". I don't know how old some of the trades are, so germination is questionable.

I'm looking for some better ideas...

My thought is...take an area and mark it off into squares. Plant each variety in it's own square. When they need to be transplanted, put them in a more permanent location. This way I've got perennials started and a fresh supply of annual seeds. I have the space in the yard to do this but the soil will need amending...Is it too early to start digging around and breaking up the soil? I'm afraid that if I stick to seedling trays on the ground, they'll dry out to quickly (last year's downfall).

Last year I also "mass planted" for a cottage garden look and couldn't remember what didn't come up! (and I couldn't tell the weeds from the plants...until I'd see flowers!) It wasn't at all like I dreamed it would be. I want to take the time and start with a weed free bed this year & actually place what I want in the bed.

Any suggestions or experiences?? Thanks!
