I had the same "itchy" feeling you had and finally gave in to the temptations this past weekend. I cleaned up all of the flower beds except the herb garden. I removed dead leaves and stalks and lightly loosened the soil. I did hold back on fertilizing though because the soil hasn't completely thawed. Most everything I have that has already started coming up will be able to take the frost/snow when we do get some.(notice I didn't say if)

I've even brought plants (scented geraniums, potted hostas & potted herbs and potted shrubs bought in January at a trade show) out of the garage & basement and onto my covered/protected front porch to start acclimating them to the sun. I was even contemplating bringing out the boston ferns but will give them another month in the basement.

If you really feel the need to get your hands dirty but are skeptical about your gardens have you tried sowing seeds inside or wintersowing? It's what gets be through the winter doldrums...never ending gardening. You gotta love it...at least I do.

I think we've seen our last freeze until after the summer months have past. I've actually had Pansies thriving in pots on my microclimate 7 front porch for a full month, now.

Well, I took what you both said and headed out to play around last evening. I've found out that a garden is the PERFECT place to be after a funeral! Anyway, I cleaned off the leaves and took out the rest of the standing stalks. There is a little bit of green starting, but I think I'll be able to add several new plants to my little plot!
