It is too good to be true?!

Hi everyone...this is the first spring that I've actually had a little plot of land to grown 'stuff' on and I am going crazy trying to keep my hands out of the dirt!!!!!!! I cleaned out the flower bed nearest the house last fall but the leaves have formed a nice little protective layer over the new little spears of green poking through the dirt. (hostas, day lilies, I'll get on to my question...Is it too soon to get those leaves to the compost pile and start getting things ready? I'm so torn!! I am itching to get out there but I am afraid that Murphy's Law will send a frost and kill all of those little starts. I don't have much out there so I don't want to damage the little but that is growing! What should I do?! What are all of you doing? Is spring really here or am I going to pay the price for giving in to the call of the dirt? Any advice would be greatly apprecited!!

~k
