 o
tree search around Philadelphia

Hello. I am looking for a tree to add to my front yard. There is a hole in an otherwise wooded area with very tall maples. The soil has some clay, and is rather dry because of sloping, compacting, and the water hogging of the other maples. The planting spot gets sun only in the morning, otherwise is shaded by the house or by the other trees.

I would very much like to add an evergreen, but a deciduous tree is also fine. I like trees with lower branching and wider or irregular crowns. Any suggestions?

Someone recommended Parrotia, Golden raintree and Redbud. Do you know where I could find larger specimens in the area?

Thank you for any responses.

Hmm, it sounds like a tough spot, possibly too much shade for an evergreen. A Serviceberry tree might survive, although they can be finicky.

Are there any smaller (understory) trees currently coexisting with the maples on other parts of the property? If so, planting the same type of tree in your clearing might work.

Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) does fine is shade, tolerates competition from other trees pretty well, and is probably your best bet. With partial sun you'll get a great-looking tree that should have a nice pyramidal form. Helocks are most common in shady, moist ravines, but are also common in drier woods. Also, it is the PA state tree.
