Yesterday while shopping at Lowes in Plymouth Meeting, I saw bags of Peony Bartzella priced at $29.99. They might have some at your Lowes also. Check it out.
Bartzella is what is called an intersectional peony. It is a cross between a tree peony and an herbaceous one. It has leaves and flowers resembling a tree peony, but it does not form a big shrub like the tree peony. It basically dies down to the ground but can form short woody stems. The color on Bartzella is a rather bright yellow, and the flowers on mine run to about 6 inches across. A price tag of about $30 is fairly inexpensive for an intersectional peony. I just wonder how old it is. It may take a few years to get going before it flowers. Peonies have to be several years old before they start blooming well.
I snatched up a bunch of seeds today from Home Depot and Wal-Mart. I will search my Lowes soon. I hope I can find a place for them where I don't need to move them, I think I remember that they hate being moved after planting once. I remember seeing a couple peonies at walmart, but not Bartzella.
