Sick (?) and overgrown Yucca plant

Hi. I've got a yucca (Adams Needle) plant that was overgrown and tangled with a lot of dead, dry leaves underneath and behind it. (It's against a fence) there's also a rose bush growing behind it and popping up through the yucca. Well, yesterday 4/20/14 I cut the leaves and pulled out and cleaned up dead foliage and pruned the rose stems. It looks like total crap now. Most of the yucca leaves have yellow decaying looking spots. Can the roses be hurting the yucca, and should or can I cut the yucca down right at the base and start over? Will it grow up with healthy leaves again like it once was? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I'm new at gardening and plant care. We're in northeast pa, and pretty sure a serious frost threat is past. Thanks.
