leaf-prune fig tree branches to increase ripening

My small fig bush produces figs each year that do not ripen before a killing frost. I have heard of removing lower leaves on each branch or 'shoot' which would cause the fruit on that particular branch to ripen earlier.

Does anyone know about this procedure?
