Longwood is an internationally famous garden. However, for those of us near Philadelphia, it is just one of the great gardens we have near us. Some of the best are:

Andalusia, ($10, reservations required)

Bartram's Garden, (free)

Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve, ($5)

Bryn Athyn Cathedral Gardens, (free)

Chanticleer Garden, ($10)

Delaware Center for Horticulture, (free)

Gibraltar, (free)

Grounds for Sculpture, ($10)

Hagley Museum, ($11)

Hortulus Farm Gardens, ($12)

Japanese Garden and House: Shofuso, ($6)

Jenkins Arboretum, (free)

Longwood Gardens, ($16)

Meadowbrook Farm, ($ by appointment)

Morris Arboretum, ($10)

Mt. Cuba Center, ($5, reservations required)

Nemours Mansion and Garden, ($?)

Scott Arboretum, (free)

Temple University Ambler Landscape Arboretum, (free)

Tyler Arboretum, ($5)

West Laurel Hill Cemetery, (free)

Winterthur, (garden tram, $15)

Wyck, ($5)

The admission fees are the straight adult fees. Often, senior and children fees also apply. See websites for details.

With my deer problems, I find it much more rewarding to visit other peoples gardens than struggle with the deer.

The following is a good book that covers these and many more local gardens. I have nothing to do with the book except that I read it and found it absolutely amazing that we have such a wealth of gardens in our area that are open to visitors.

Here is a link that might be useful: Great Gardens of Philadelphia Region

We are fortunate to have so many wonderful gardens. Your list reminds me of many I have not yet seen and others I need to see again. I drive past Chanticleer on my way home from work. It closes at 5 excpet Frdiays, so I sometimes stop on a Friday. Jenkins is nearby, too and a great place to breathe some fresh air after a day in the office.

Jenkins has closed due to major renovations to their education center. They expect to open next Spring.

Here are two free gardens to take its place.

The Highlands Mansion & Gardens, Fort Washington

The Learning Gardens at Montgomery County Cooperative Extension, Collegeville
