Has anyone ever made a compost bin out of old pallets? I've been looking at it on the internet and was wondering if anyone else ever tried it. Looks like I missed all the compost classes here around Pittsburgh. :-(

I havn't made a compost bin out of old skids. But imagine you could. I made mine out of left over scraps of lumber around the house. I used 4x4's left over from deck building for the four corners. Then for the sides and back I used. 1x2's, 1x3's, etc. ran horizontal, spaced about an inch apart. No front, no top so easy access, and no bottom. It is about 8 years old and I rebiult it once, mainly to make it bigger. I think anything that would confine...control... the pile and allow some air flow would work.

I've never made one but I've seen them. They work great. Not super attractive though. Try and find the book "Let it rot" because there might be instructions in there.

My neighbor gave me four brand new pallets! I am so excited and am hoping my husband can do the assembly. I will definitely check that book out. Thanks for the info.

I've been using pallets for my compost for maybe 5-7 years. I just had to replace the rotting pallets this year. I use 5 pallets to make 2 bins which are connected with the fronts open. I use 3 for the sides (they share the middle side) and each bin has a back with the fronts open. I hold them together with plastic coated wire that my husband had. They are at the back of my property by the garden so they don't have to be pretty. But they are effective for me. I try to find the pallets that have slats that are closer together - I'm rather picky when getting the pallets!
