plants for under a Pin Oak

Posted by makll 6 (My Page) on

I have been here several times doing research and need some help.

I have planted numerous things under a Pin oak with no success.

Its a large tree, branches are about 6' above ground. Lots of sun in the afternoon. So i tried sun loving plants, ground covers (adjua), ferns (some of them are coming along) jack in the pulpit, and who knows what else. I am frustrated.

This will be the third try, Any suggestions with successful plantings?
many thanks

RE: plants for under a Pin Oak

I have a fairly large bed under a Pin Oak. It is mostly hostas with a few Heucheras, Ferns and Pulmonaria. I plant annual Impatients, Begonias and Caladium also.

Pin Oaks are one of the easier trees to plant under. Just be sure to fertilize and water the entire area, not just the plants you put in.

Good Luck!
