Evergreen shrub for shade

Hello!

I'm in West Chester PA - in the midst of a major house remodel. We'll be doing some landscaping this fall. I need a recommendation for an evergreen shrub (flowering or not) that will grow 6-7ft tall in the shade for the front of our house. It will only get a little sun in the afternoon.

Also - I'm thinking about Virburnum for another shaded spot at side of house. Which is the best variety for this area? I'm thinking med to med-tall range.

And finally - any suggestions for a climbing rose that will tolerate shade?

Oh - and I guess they should be relatively deer resistant too - although I'm willing to spray with Deer Minder.

I guess that is it for now - happy to have found this forum!

Hi Xinnia,
I'm in delaware county. Bluestone has Mountain Laurel (Kalmia) 1/2 price until june 1st. It does well in mostly shady. There are several hydrangeas that like shade too.
Good luck with your renovation
Kathy

Any kind of juniper might work, depending on the shade level. I've got some planted on the east side of my house, getting sun only in the mornings, growing well. Juniper comes in many shapes/sizes/colors, and deer don't touch it.

Rhododendrens don't mind shade. The deer don't seem to eat them but they sure love azaleas.

Yew will take shade. Also, you might want to try some of the dwarf hemlocks. They are lovely and there are many varieties.
