Does anyone know where I can buy a plastic rain barrel in the Lehigh Valley? I've seen them online and in catalogs, but I'd like to avoid the high shipping charges.
You could try contacting the Lehigh County Conservation District. I would start with their Watershed Specialist. While they will likely not have any barrels themselves, they might know organizations or companies that are selling them or giving them away.
The Montgomery County Conservation District had a rain barrel give away as part of a public education campaign last year. Residents attended public meetings about water conservation and received Rainsaver(TM) rain barrels.
One year I used a plastic trashcan. You can cut a hole in the lid and fit the drain into it, or just take the lid off of the can when it is supposed to rain. Much cheaper than a rain barrel and I liked the color better. A friend of mine has a husband who is handy and he fitted a hose attachment to the bottom of the trashcan they use as a rain barrel.
I have 2 big blue plastic 50 gallon drums which were origionally Coke syrup drums. Also chocolate syrup comes in them. Try around commercial bakeries or large food establishments.
