Too late to plant a Kousa Dogwood?

Posted by dedtired Eastern USA (My Page) on

I have procrastinated about replacing a tree in my yard. I think a Kousa Dogwood would work well in that spot. Is it too late in the season to plant one? I live just outside of Philadelphia, in the northwest direction (Ardmore Bryn Mawr area.). Thanks.

If you can find one in a pot, it should be fine.

Okay, thanks. I did order one from Montgomery Nurseries. Its root ball is wrapped in burlap. The woman told me that as long as I water it religiously for the first year, it will be fine. I hope so!

Thanks again.

dedtired - are you *really* worried about it not getting enough water right now? LOLOLOLOL!

I'm sure it will be fine. Just soak it REALLY well if we go more than 5 - 6 days without rain (like THAT is going to happen! LOLOLOL)

If you get it B&B (balled & burlap) get it in the ground as soon as possible! B&B trees have usually had about 90% if their roots removed during removal from the field nursery. The roots need to be in the soil very soon after digging and delivery.

Ha -- I guess I should be more concerned about the tree floating away rather than drying out. Lord, I am sick of this rain.

I do plan to get it in the ground this weekend. It is balled and burlapped. It arrived yesterday and was there when I got home. It was lying on its side in the yard! I propped it up against a stake. The root ball is truly a ball and I can see how it would roll over.

So, I won't have to water at all this weekend. In fact I will be out digging in a storm, I'm sure. At least it is easier to dig wet dirt than when it's dry and hard as concrete.

The nursery gave me very specific planting instructions, which I plan to follow. It's such a cute tree.
