We just purchased a lovely 1917 Craftsman home in the Overbrook boro of Pittsburgh and will be moving in a couple of months. I am a Master Gardener in Washington and Oregon and am from South Carolina to begin with, but have never gardened in the Pittsburgh climate. Our new yard is a blank slate with nothing but a huge ugly Rhodie next to the porch. It is going to come out and I would love some suggestions for plants that are "old" and would look well with a golden brick two story house. I plan to plant heirloom roses and and herb garden, but am unsure what perennials and shrubs do well in the Pittsburgh

climate.

Anything that does well in zone 5 or 6. Pittsburgh is close to the boundary between 5 and 6. The Horticultural Society of Western Pennsylvania is having a garden tour coming up on July 13. Maybe you can go on the tour and see what other gardeners are growing in the area. Welcome to the area.

Hi,

Welcome to Pittsburgh! I live in Pittsburgh on the East side and I have oak leaf hydrandgeas, hydrangeas, butterlfy bushes, spirea, azaleas and rhodies in my yard.

P.S. My mother grew up in Overbrook.

Irises, lilies of the valley, Chinese lanterns, butterfly bushes, stonecrop, tulips, hyacinths...there's quite a lot that does well in the Pittsburgh area. :)
