Potted tree?

I am looking for some advice. I have a 4 x 4 brick landing on the side of my house (that the old owners used as a place to store trashcans) that a potted tree would look great on. Does anyone have advice as to where I could find a box, pot or something that is in the 3 x 3 range to plant the tree in.

Also - do I need to insulate the planter so that the roots do not freeze in the winter?
