What are these freaking beetles?

| Not the japanese beetles.
These are about four times larger than the devils, and green. They are swarming over the lawn in my yard right now. Like the japanese beetles, they fly rather haphazardly and bang into things.
My cat is afraid of them, and I'm not so crazy about them, either.
Does anyone know what they are? Are they dangerous? Are they a benefit in any way? Any ideas on how to get rid of them? |

| June Beetles I think. When we were little kids we'd tie a piece of thread on their legs and have our very own flying kites....They were always easy to catch. I've only seen a few of them in the past summers where I live now. Maybe someone else can tell you more them. |

Sorry had to post again.... I was just outside checking out my gardens and I nearly dropped to the ground because I heard a very loud buzzing coming toward my head. A few minutes later I heard it again as I'm checking out my Lord Anenome's first bloom. There it was a big ol' june beetle buzzing around. As I said they're easy to catch, it landed on the grass. An easy pickup, threw it toward my pups to see if they'd chase it, but the loud buzzing made 'em go the other way. I'm sure they'll be chasing after them by the end of the summer; as long as the dogs stay out of my gardens :o) |

| Thanks for answering that question. I saw them for the first time while visiting somebody's horse farm yesterday. I was pretty freaked out by the sight of them, thinking that if japanese beetles had mutated, my plants didn't stand a chance. |

| I've seen them here for the first time this Summer. I hope the June Beetles know its July. |

| I was wondering about these beetles, too. Every afternoon, my yard is filled with the sounds of buzzing and banging as these guys fly around and hit the walls. And now I know what they are. See the link below for a photo of the green June beetle and a short article on the damage they can cause to fruit. Fortunately for most gardeners, it sounds like they don't eat leaves of flowers. |

| A little research reveals that this will become an annual thing for whomever has them. Apparently their appearance isn't because they flew into the area but because they just emerged from larva out of the ground. http://www.ivyhall.district96.k12.il.us/4th/kkhp/1insects/junebeetle.html |
oops--not just fruit damage

| This site says that serious damage is done to the lawn: http://iaa.umd.edu/umturf/Insects/Green_June_Beetle.html |

| Do june beetles like tomatoes? They are always swarming around my dad's garden, and it's kind of difficult to dodge them when you're balanced precariously on one leg in the cucumber patch trying to reach the first cherry tomatoes. :) |

| I thought the huge buzzy bugs were cicadas. |
