Anyone know how to do Roses well in NWPA?

I like roses, but never seem to be able to grow them well. The first ones I had I gave up on and for years decided they were just off-limits for me. Well, this year I decided to try again. Found some on sale...and I am always a sucker for a sale! Now I have 2 planted in the ground, 3 more that I re-potted into large containers for the deck and 2 more still in their original plastic pots. I know I could go to the Rose forums here at GW (I do lurk there to get general info) but so many of the posts I see there are from people living in much warmer zones and would really like to get advice from someone living in my general area.

My main question right now is: when can I put the 2 roses still in plastic pots in the ground? I know it is too hot right now. Will I just have to bury the whole pot and wait for next spring or can they be put in late summer and time to get established enough to survive?

Thanks for any help/insight you can give.

Plant them as soon as possible.
They need time to establish a good deep root system to be able to survie over the winter.
Water, water and water again, every day the temp is over 85 degreese.
Do that the first week.
After the first week and they look better, water very deeply about once or twice a week. No more than that. That also will help them establish good deep root system.
ANd mulch. Much right after you put them into the ground, now, and then in fall, mulch at least 2-3 inches around the rose bush. Don't get the mulch right next to the main stem or "trunk".
It is very important to buy roses that are cold hardy to your area.
That is why I prefer to buy my roses at local nurseries and not online or at Home Depot or Lowes.
Not all roses will survie zone 5 winter.
Mulching and planting in a sunny spot will probably do it for you though.
Roses love water and sun.

Thank you butterfly. I will get my remaining 2 in the ground, water like mad and pray for the best! I did only buy ones that were labeled at least z5, a couple I think were good to z4.

Do you know how to go about over-wintering roses in containers? I really would like to save this one, it's my favorite, at least my favorite for today! Just love the color.

That rose is a beautiful color!
No wonder you want to keep it.
When you want to overwinter it, when it gets really cold here, probably around Halloween, dig a hole in the ground, preferably up against a building, and put the pot with the rose in the hole. Then cover the pot on the ground and inside the pot on the rose with mulch.
That is the safest way to overwinter a rose in a pot.
Try not to keep the pot where it will receive a lot of direct wind.
Some people put rose cones over their roses in colder parts of the country and Canada.But they are planted in the ground.
Roses really aren't hard to grow.
And they can be addicting.
I still can't get over the color of that rose. Gorgeous!
