Disposal of Japanese Beetles

I could really use some advice here! What does a person do with the stinky bags of dead beetles in between trash pick-ups? My dear husband is having a fit about the smell (he's not concerned about the flower damage). Any ideas will be appreciated. Please don't suggest I put them in neighbors trash. Thanks!

Last year I didn't have to deal with them, one of the critters chewed off the bottom of the (full) bags and there wasn't a beetle left to be found. But normally I tied the bag shut with a twist tie, put it in a heavy duty ziplock and tossed them in the trash.

What a great question!! They are the stinkiest things I think I've ever had in the garbage. Luckily we are the only house on a cul-d-sac and my hubby keeps our can on the other side of the circle. He dumps the stinky things into a garbage bag and ties it shut and puts it out there. Hefty or Gladd came out with a garbage bag that is supposed to not allow the garbage smell to come out. Maybe try those for this special circumstance. The first time we emptied our traps my husband dumped the beetles in a large plastic snack container just so we could see how many we caught and believe it or not we could still smell them even with the lid on!! Maybe throw in a box of baking soda with them, too, seriously. Good luck!

When I used the traps, I would dump the day's catch into an empty spaghetti sauce jar and put it in the sun. The beetles would be dead in about 10 minutes. I'd leave them until the next day to make sure they were cooked through (to make sure any eggs inside were dead), then spread them around the planting beds. Spread out like that, I could not smell them. That's some good slow release nitrogen for the plants!

My friend feeds them to her chickens. I bury them.

A few days ago I discovered that the fish in our pond LOVE Japanese beetles. I knock the beetles off into a jar and dump them into the water in one big wriggling lump. The Sunnies swarm like Pyrahnas as they gobble them up. Satisfying to watch.
