Mushroom Mania

I posted this in the harvest forum, but thought I'd throw a line here too.
I've been picking button mushrooms every day for the past how many weeks!!! So far, I've just canned them with a bit of salt, but now I'm out of half pints and they are gaining on me!!! Is there anything other ways to preserve them? I'm thinking about drying them, but have never tried it, or even used dried mushrooms.
Any new ideas?

Jackie

scrappyjack, Do these look like the mushrooms you are talking about? My family always went Shroom hunting in Ire but now i'm around paranoid folk who have me worried about eating them!! I'd have them plain and simple in a little bit of cream, sage & maybe some smoked gruyère cheese. Sorry i've never preserved anything.

Here is a link that might be useful: Shroom Pic

Yes!!! Those are them. But I would pick them before they would open up so far. I like them really compact. they slice better or are a nice firm shape for deep frying.
I love mushrooms in Beef Stroganoff, and of course anything Italian.
I posted this inquiry in the harvest forum also and got some interesting response.

Enjoy!

RE: Mushroom Mania

Jackie,

Do you know exactly what type of mushroom you are picking? When I read your posts on the harvest forums and here, I went a little cold thinking you don't have any mushroom hunting experience. Do you know what you're doing? If not, DO NOT EAT THOSE MUSHROOMS. Just because a wild mushroom looks like what you buy in the store, does not mean it is the same thing. There are many poisonous mushrooms that look like store bought mushrooms. They can kill you and your daughter. Identifying a mushroom when it is still in a button is particulary difficult. If you did not identify the mushrooms and ate one already, call you poison center immediately and take a sample of the mushrooms with you. The most deadly mushrooms will not make you sick for a while, but if caught early enough (generally before symptoms begin), death and liver transplant can be avoided.

If you are an experienced mushroom hunter, carry on and enjoy your mushrooms!
