Brown roads

I always love driving through the PA countryside especially Bucks County area. One thing I find attractive is the brown asphalt. I think it adds so much to the scenery. Is that from iron? I think it would be neat to have my driveway done this way not that I believe I could find someone to do it. Just curious if anyone knows about it.

Loretta, I believe it is from a brown shale used as the road aggregate. I remember going down a road in Virginia about 10 years ago, where the road changed color every mile for about 10 miles. Quite a rainbow. Turns out they were testing different aggregates for durability and tje stone had different colors. Red, brown, green, gray, many shades.
