That's my understanding - that you only prune the canes that bore fruit and it should be done now rather than in spring.

The link is a word keyed advertisment. iVillage is apparently selling ad space to businesses this way. I'm not too fond of the idea, but all-in-all, find it less obnoxious than the header ads which take up so much time and space on eack page change.

I'd not only prune out the canes that bore fruit but also weak, diseased canes and then do a final thinning sa as to have 4-6" between remaining strong canes. Then I would even tip those in the fall to 5'. After saying that, I missed the pruning of my summer berries last year and did my pruning very early this spring with no noticable difference. In fact my summer bearers had by far the best yield ever this year. I wish I could say the same for my everbearing crop. I think the drought has had a permanent impact on yields.
