| Thanks to Google I identified "the subject" as a Marked Tussock Moth Caterpillar. Himself and his buddies may be decimating the newly planted wisteria but they are really very cool. Besides, I think the wisteria can withstand a nibble or two.... It’s a native (macrostachys) It must have something moth caterpillars like! There was a saddle back on it a few weeks ago. |

| I have seen many interesting caterpillars this year. Unfortunately my wife nevers sees the saddlebacks until they sting her good. After four hits she decided no more mowing around the blueberries and quince bushes. They must hurt since it is the only times I have ever seen her cry. |

| Oh my! Silent, your mention of saddlebacks made me go look them up - we just saw one! My 10 yo daughter and I were at a restaurant and she found one on the sidewalk. We used a piece of paper to move it off the pavement to a spot under a shrub. Fortunately, she is squeamish about touching many bugs. But I came *that* close to just picking it up for her. I sure would have been sorry. I didn't know there was such a thing as stinging caterpillar - they look so innocuous. Thanks for mentioning it! |
