Any tips to help her make it thru a zone five Winter?? She's a young plant, And that may be the reason for not flowering this Spring. The Montanas are new to me, and did not notice any buds, but she may have been clipped by a late frost. I know she is root hardy because right now the foliage is quite dramatic, Plum Purple and deep green she's a keeper just for that reason. I plan to put a cage around her base and mulch with leaves. she is in a North planting, where she should be, Im thinking of covering her Feb. or March with row cover or landscape cloth to protect the buds. Someone in zone 5 has to have a Montana, so I am open to all your input.

I'm not in zone 5, but I think your plan sounds good. As you know, she blooms on old wood, so do what you must to protect those vines! Good luck.
