I am in middle PA, half way between Pittsburgh and Erie. Has anyone had any luck growing Almond Trees? If so, what varieties and from where?

Thank you,

Jim

Haven't tried, but just saw a special on TV about these...I think that it would be impossible to harvest any nuts - you would need California conditions

Jim;
I have been wondering the same thing. I see them in all the fruit catalogs and they say they will grow here but it would be nice to talk to someone who actually got them to produce! BTW, we must live in the same general area. I live just below Meadville in the country.

I see the same thing, they are advertised as hardy to z5 but there doesn't seem to be anyone out there saying what a big crop they are getting! I was looking at them too, there are two types listed at Jungs.... but I'm always a little suspect about the "hardy in the north" claim on a lot of these things....

Here is a link that might be useful: hardy almonds?

RE: Almond Trees

I live in Pa as well--between Philadelphia and harrisburg. I tried planting 'Hearty' almond and 'hearty' pecan trees last year. I planted a few of them because the company said they would survive in this area. They were wrong. Every one of mine died. I even mulched around them to protect them. d I lost my money. I could have ordered more--for free(just paying the s/h) but what was the point? They would have just died too. At least I tried it-and now I know better.
Instead I planted english walnuts(which are growing fast!) and American filberts. I alternated them (english walnut, filbert, english walnut, filbert) because the walnutes get tall and the filberts stay on the shorter side.
So forget the almonds--they wont make it. :( So sad because it would have been great to have some fresh almonds too. Oh well....
