warming up the windmills again

Hey all,
Another unseasonal cold snap has arrived here today. The good part is there is no precipitation in the forecast at all, so I am not worried about keeping the crown dry. I have never done this before, but this what I came up with to keep the a little warmer during these cold snaps.
Tonight I put about 3 inches of mulch around the base to give the roots a layer of protection. I wrapped the trunks in fleece blankets I had, up to the where the petioles begin, which is probably 5' high. I plan on removing them Saturday, as that afternoon will be the first time it will get above freezing. I plan on raking the mulch back whenever rain is in the forecast as well. Any thoughts on this method? I am thinking it shouldn't have any detrimental effects to the trees as long as I use them when it's dry and don't keep them wrapped up for too long at a time. Then again, I've never done this before so let me know if this can be a bad thing!
Thanks.
