About to head out...

| ...with the shovel. We are getting hammered here at the beach. Go 60 miles north or so, and they're getting little to nothing. About a foot out there now and it's still coming down. Sustained winds at 20 to 30 mph. I've lived here my whole life (almost 50 yrs now), and can't remember 2 Winters in a row where we bore the brunt of storms as opposed to western and northern areas. But...it always happens...storm comes from the west, and we get rain, storm comes from the south (oddly enough) and we get killed. Overall, the temps this Winter have not been terrible, just the precip. Probably picked the wrong year to allow my ten year old windmill to go unprotected for the season. As I look out the window at him, all appears okay for now. In the meantime, how 'bout a view of paradise...

| Trichmick, just wanted to reassure you that your palms will be fine. I am one of those millions of people in the immediate NYC/NJ Metro area who are looking outside their windows and see NOTHING--no snow (falling...on the ground...), hardly a breeze--just overcast. I don't recall a storm that so dramatically affected so much of the state and left the northeastern quadrant unaffected--just about all the big one eventually get here and leave the state last once they do. What's great about the Trachy is its relatively high tolerance for winter cold and wet (as long as your soil is well-draining). I think the biggest limiting factor for this palm is really the severity and duration of minimum winter temps (below zone 7 even an adult specimen would need some protection). I'm not sure if a lot of snow is a net advantage (insulation of the ground), net disadvantage (air temps--especially at night--bottom out lower in an area covered in snow), or if it just breaks even. (Local minimums won't be dropping below mid teens.) Either way, your palms will be fine! |

| I live just south of NYC and I got 5 inches of snow and another inch, maybe 2 is in the forecast before the storm ends. Talk about a HUGE difference in snowfall amounts in a very small area. just 20 miles north of me and little snow fell. In central park NY, I dont think any snow fell, maybe some flurries. Long island also got little snow and so did northern new jersey. It looks like anyone south of 40°35'N got at least 5 inches from this storm, and anyone north of that really got very little. So far it looks like DC got nearly 20 inches, some areas got more. Parts of Maryland got 25 inches, and there are even some reports of 20 inches in maryland! Thats just devestating. Power is out in areas affected by the worst parts of the storm. Once this snow gets shoveled out of the way its time to prepare on another for wed. Only difference is that this next one will also spread farther north as well as affect those affected from this storm. Some areas probably wont even have all the streets plowed from this last storm before this next one hits. Some people could have 40 inches of snow on there lawn by thursday! This winter will definitely be remebered for many people. |

| We dodged the bullet this time. The north GA. mountains got freezing rain yesterday and an inch of snow today. The problem here this winter has been rain.We have been under a flood warning so many times this winter,I lost count. The ground never gets a chance to dry out before we get more rain.I wonder if I should start growing swamp plants!!!Good luck to all of you up north, there's a big one comming.DC.Is suppost to break a 88yr record for snow. |

| Has finally stopped. In fact, a little bit of a sunset this evening. I would say the final "real" total was about 18 inches or so. I have 3 to 4 ft. drifts in my backyard...essentially covering the trunk of my windmill. Took a ride down to the beach and got this pic. Doesn't do justice to the conditions at the time. Blizzard-like would be an understatement.
