Hey everybody,
Im just curious to see how many of you also use the Palmtalk forum?
For those of you who haven't heard of Palmtalk it is a great source of Palm knowledge and is full of friendly experienced and novice gardeners.
I would highly recommend becoming a member, its free and easy!

While i enjoy this forum very much it can be very "dead" sometimes. :(

Great site, but very focused on tropical palms. This site seems to be more geared more toward hardy palms and cooler climates.

I agree, great site but as mentioned, very tropical in it's discussions.....this one will light up when the weather warms back up-cold hardy as it is..

    Hi
Since 95 percent of all palms are tropical in origin
Wouldn't it sort have to be centered on tropical?? lol

The hardypalm forum looks interesting but I signed up and verified the automated response and they still haven't given me access after 24 hrs.

When I signed up for hardypalm, same thing happened. I had to email them to get it done.

Be warned, Lago! There is an ugly Virginia Beach/Norfolk vs Atlanta rivalry on that site!

I'm not on palmtalk, but I am on the hardy palm board. It's a nice board, takes a while to get used to and gardenweb is better at archiving messages, but the hardypalm board is more active especially in the winter time.

Looks like Palmtalk just started a forum dedicated to cold hardy palms. Most of the posters over there are from California and Florida, and not many of us. Might be nice for a few of us to post our trials and tribulations on that site too. Show those palm growers in places where it's not a challenge at all a thing or two about how to really grow some palms.

Yes cliff we worked on getting one for a few weeks. And finally we got it.
For those of you who didnt want to join because it was too tropical oriented, They listened and have done this for you.
So sign up and check it out :)

".........Show those palm growers in places where it's not a challenge at all a thing or two about how to really grow some palms........"

That's the thing with palm growing, it can be a challenge anywhere, depending on the species you're trying to grow. I'm forever fine tuning conditions but have still lost a number, with others still just hanging on.

Interesting the amount of cold hardy palm poster on this forum....

I check in there sometimes but can't always relate much to the types of palms on there...

Site is great for information. They tend to be focused on pushing the zone envelope for many exotic species. I have always wanted to post a thread titled ...."Growing Coconuts in Alaska."

I find the posters here to be more democratic (small d), representing a greater cross-section of..., growing zones, experiences, interests, and geographical regions. PalmTalk tends to more California-centric, experienced/professional collectors (or complete novices), and do tend to focus on more tropical species (and can be disparaging of cold hardier varieties, including; Trachycarpus, Washingtonia, Sabals, etc.). That's been more impression at least. I also agree with wetsuiter above, I also find this forum (and related fora/forums), more hospitable with less drama.

I use the PalmTalk forums under the same name. Quite honestly, I like both forums and the Cold Hardy forum has quite a few people from much lower zones.

Many of the members on Palmtalk are members of various chapters of the International Palm Society and because of that, there is a higher degree of interaction between members who attend IPS events together (biennials in Thailand, Cuba, Colombia etc, and monthly IPS meetings and auctions in people's private gardens.) The classified section is an amazing feature that allows for trading and selling of seeds and plants. I've interacted with and traded/sold/bought seeds and plants with members from throughout the US and from Germany, South Africa, Mexico, Greece, Australia, Brazil etc... it's often the first and only place seeds of obscure species are made available (Sabal Lisa, Syagrus santosii and Syagrus lorenzoniorum are three examples that come to mind.)

I've been a life member of the IPS since the mid 90s. Even though I've grown 275 species of palms, my main focus is cycads. I used to be very active in the other than palms page more than the palm page. I use more of the Facebook groups now, but still check out palm talk every few days.

Kinzyjr, do we know each other? My nursery is in north Lakeland. I've been here for 32 years.

Not much posting by Bay Area palm people. Even as decades go by since a deep freeze, the bay area palm growers who post have the tried and true. Not many trying something different. Royal Palms,Flamethrowers..all are reported to be doing fine in the bay area. But as anecdotal. No real accounts of trunking palms. That kind of thing. Other than Jim Dent.

Plenty of Cycads and tropical palms are in specialists yards here..and they aren't really telling.

    @plantsman56

We do, in fact, know each other. We both attend CFPACS meetings. I was finally able to make it to your nursery by invitation today. Sorry for the late reply. I don't browse or post here as much as I used to.

I recognized your user name here from when you posted a couple of palm pics a year or so ago. When meeting you yesterday, I still didn't make this exact connection though. Good to know. It was great having you out yesterday to see my little collection.

I find there is a definite upper class group of people who seldom talk to others. its like begging for an autograph from self proposed experts.
