Hey guys I just bought a house that has some Pgymy date Palm Trees. Just wondering if i can get some tips on maintaining them, or should i rip them out? are they savable? They have brown tops and some droopy leaves. I live in Elk Grove Ca.

Congradultions on buying a house. I bet you got a good deal! I have one clump of these palms in a pot for 6 years now. Are yours completely brown or is there new green growth from the center of the crown? Do you have any idea what made them turn brown (cold or drought)? If dry I'd water them and remember these cost real money if they are a good size and are worth trying to save. Also, they like a couple of table spoons of epson's salts sprinkled around them a few times a summer. Then water. They love magnesium or they will start to yellow and brown. Keep us posted.

Hi - I noticed your advice re: epsom salts and pygmies. Is that true for all palms, or just these? (I also grow a Trachy wagnerianus and a Rhapis excelsa). How much would you apply to a clump of three pygmies in a pot that is around 16" in diam? Thank you! Tom

I use it on other palms because most do like the magnesium, however I recommend palm fertilizer or similar fertilizers with lots of micro nurients if your palm is yellowing. They need more than just magnesium in many cases. Check-out the back of the time release fertilizers for flowers.

Whatever you decide-either keep them or to cut them down, just dont decide to transplant them. Chances are very good they will up and die. And right now it sounds like they just havent been watered enough waiting for new owners and that TLC...
