Need opinions and expertise on landscape bed

I would like to hear your thoughts on my ideas or whether you have any opinions as I plan long term for this landscape border.

New border bed in 2011 looked good by mid-summer...

...but this is how it looks mid-winter. yikes!

What are some good BLE's to mix in a z7a location? I get only shade in the morning and more than 6 hours of afternoon sun in this location.

1) Aucuba japonica

2) Camellias

3) Cotoneaster lacteus

4) Chinese Holly (would prefer Yaupon Holly)

Some borderline plants I'd like to try:

1) Cast Iron Plant (too much light?)

2) Ensete maurelli (realize this would be gone in winter)

3) Manihot grahamii or hardy tapioca (would be gone in winter too)

4) Hope Hardy Philodendren (would likely die back if not just die)

5) Oehme's Variegated Palm Sedge (anybody plant this?)

Would appreciate any opinions. Thanks.
