Putting it out in the sun didn't help. I can see it's been fried, since this palm was probably not acclimatized to the sun. Too much water/sogginess is not a good thing either since it drowns the roots and prevents any air/oxygen to enter.

Also, this palm doesn't look like an Areca - it looks like a Kentia.

It probably won't recover.

We bought it from homebase about two years ago it has always been good and thriving until we repotted it,http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk/butterfly-palm-houseplant-in-milano-pot-055726 home base says its a butterfly? This forum isn't great for palm advise as you are probably thinking, responses are few and far between, guess people don't know.huh?

Anyways it certainly is an Areca (Dypsis lutescens).
So firstly I'd say the roots have had to much disruption, strictly minimal disturbance only, the pot is also to big.
Direct sun on an unacclimatized Dypsis is damaging but I would think the nail in the coffin here is overwatering, I would also avoid cold rain water, room temperature rain water or distilled water is best.
I would certainly dispose of it if you haven't and start again.
I tend to avoid homebase palms, you may find better homegrown Areca palms in your local independent gardern center.

Hi there, thank you :) I haven't thrown it... I took the dead dried up leaves off earlier and it does look happier. I will see if I can save it before giving up hope
