Dead palm?

I have a Pygmy Date Palm that I purchased 2 years ago. It is 3-4 foot tall. I live in Southern Alabama almost on the Florida line. I was out of town for several days and we had some very cold weather with an ice storm. All of my fronds were brown and after the last frost we cut them off. I have no new growth and the trunk feels soft. I have tried to scrap a little of the trunk and I don't see any green, it just looks like brown fibers. How do I tell if it is dead?

If the trunk is soft, it is dead! The scratch test for green under the trunk/stem etc, is an excellent test! If you see green, should recoup, if not, it is dead.
P.S, this past winter killed a lot of palms in the East and a Southeast!
