Saint Augustine Coconut Palm - spring 09' update

I spent a couple weekends in Saint Augustine recently and was in the area of the famous Saint Augustine Coconut Palm on San Marco. I was curious of it's condition (as many of you might also be) after such a harsh Florida winter so I snapped a couple pics. I was surprised to find out it survived with moderate damage. It should make a full recovery.

Also, stopped by Moultrie Palms, visited Frank & Elaine Lewis and picked up another 2 Mule's. Frank was having a great sale so I couldn't resist. :) Surprising notes regarding Moultrie Palms stock. Mr. Frank left most palms uncovered through the winter and stated low's were in the LOW 20's... the result is that his Kings were clobbered with little chance of recovery. His Queens pulled through no problem. His Royals suffered damage but surprisingly are all recovering. And many of his young Mule's (1-7 gallon) suffered spear pull, several with no chance of recovery.

Wow must be a great micorclimate their. This year was really cold in Florida. There were 3 nights last winter where that could have been fried. Thant looks like it may be a long term survivior.

It looks pretty good considering where it's located,it probably didn't see below 28-29F, though with a lot of chilly weather since it's so far north. Somebody should sneak a zip-lock bag of fertilizer to put around it, and give it every advantage possible. Thank you, and keep us updated.

It looks good considering the kind of winter it has been through. It should be fertilized with a good 12-4-8 palm fertilizer containg the micronutrients, especially Boron and Copper to help it recover from the cold, and it needs to be watered since Florida has been experiencing severe droughts too.

Found two more coconut palms in the St Augustine area. These are in Vilano Beach on the intercoastal about a mile north of the bridge.

I've been in St. Auggie a few times this summer, and this particular palm is still alive and continues to thrive after the serious winter we had. This winter looks like it'll be not as cold, so there is plenty of hope for my property along the east side of the St. Johns River.

I was just in Saint Augustine for a Halloween party, too bad I didn't have enough time to snap some current pics. I'm sure the coco has recovered nicely since last winters severe winter.
