Northern natural range of Serenoa palms

It seems as though Serenoa palms in the north western portions of the SE US (Alabama, Mississippi area) would be at least as cold tolerant as needle palms are, but everything I've read indicates Serenoa are all sensitive to cold. Even though the city of Tallahassee has experienced minus three degrees Fahrenheit, possibly Serenoa will not tolerate such temperatures but will re-colonize affected areas later through bird-distributed actions? As an aging male I would be delighted to discover a Serenoa that will survive in my area, any insights would be appreciated.
