Detroit Farmers Mkt: 50 yr Washingtonia Robusta & Banana plants

Spotted this lovely, huge Mexican Fan Palm at the Pottery Guy space at the Eastern Market in Detroit today. $500, which I did not think was too awful terrible!

I have my own MFP babies but if someone wanted a nice big one, this is a great plant.

It's never wintered outside, the woman there told me, though.

Go look!

Also, lots of vendors have Red Abyssinian

Banana plants and Musa Basjoo plants for a lot less and bigger plants than you get mail order from Plant Delights.

Tomorrow is the famous Flower Day!!!

its a nice palm, but 500 dollars is a bit too much! I'd expect maybe 200 dollars and out in California or Florida you could probably get that palm for 100 dollars! I've seen 30 foot royal palms being sold here for 300 dollars and its very comon to see 10 foot Christmas palms for 150 dollars and those palms are much slower growing than washingtonias.

Anybody can sell a big plant! Atleast here in N.C. we grow ours outside. If it says it will live in z7 it has been field tested in z7! And for many ppl that's worth a little more when it comes to rare plants.

If it were a similar sized Jubea than that would justify the price.

I agree, a plant grown outdoors year round in a cold zone is worth a bit more to me than a plant grown in the south because then I know it can handle my winters. As far as potted plants go, I would just take the cheap one grown in a warm climate than an expensive one grown up north as an indoor/outdoor plant because I have not had any problems with growing plants grown in a warm climate all their lives as an indoor/outdoor plant up north (but I have had problems with cold hardy palms that are greenhouse grown once they have to live in a northern climate outdoors yearound)

Any idea what other types of bananas they had for sale other than basjoo and ensete? Did they have smaller mex fan palms too?
