How to remove roots of Giant Bird of Paradise

canicci

We've removed 3 clumps of Giant Bird of Paradise as interfering with house/wall. These plants are well over 7 years old - previous owner planted them. We want to replant in one area and put in patio over the other clumps.

We're digging and hacking away at the roots, but there's just so much of it. Any advice for how to get it all out. I don't want new cannas to interfere with new plants or the new patio.

Thanks.
