dioon giant cycad

I came across 2 Dioon Giant Cycads recently from a local HD that had been neglected. It caught my eye due to the color and texture of the leaves. One has no limbs at all but new growth is apparent. What is the best planting and care for this type Cycad? I live in zone 8, Mobile,Al.
Should I plant in ground, shade or full sun? Would potted be better due to zone? Type soil? Any advice would be appreciated .

There are several different species of Dioon commercially available but they are all pretty hardy.

I would plant them into a large pot and situate them in full or partial sun. Give them a chance to recover this summer. I would not plant them outdoors yet - they need to be strong and healthy to have a chance of enduring a winter outdoors. Wait until you have done some research into what species you actually have, and how you can provide winter protection. In the meantime, water and fertilize well. If you have an unheated garage, you can store them there for the winter.

There is plenty of info online about potting mix, fertilizers, etc. Too much to get into now.

It is realy aggravating to go to hd or lowes and see palms in distress simply because they water them too little or too much !

It's hard to tell without a close-up of the leaves. It is probably edule or spinulosum but someone else may know better.

FYI, they will do MUCH better in deep pots. All cycads have deep root systems and often show significantly better growth in pots that are deeper than wide. It's hard to find decorative pots that are deep but they are out there.

Just another observation - those blue pots look like they bulge out a little on the sides...if/ when the roots fill in and it's time to repot (cycad or any other plant), you will not be able to do it without having to cut away at the roots. For cycads, this is definitely not wise.
