Bought a giant Queen Palm.

| Came across two of them at HD -- finally, had something interesting. It is about 12 feet tall, with 5 large fronds (couple of them were a little chewed up on the ends from shipping damage) and a nice spear.
So, this will definitely need to be a potted plant for me, indoors in the winter.
It was in a 14" pot. I bumped it up to an 18" with a blend of Staygreen potting mix and clean sand.
Anything special I should know about these -- care, watering, etc? |

| No, nothing special to note about them in terms of their maintenance. This is one of my favorite species to create an instant tropical effect (reminds me of my favorite palm (Royal Florida/Cuban). I have two Queen palms (not sure of how tall they are--will measure later out of curiosity). Mine are in two of those big plastic tubs you see being sold at HD. They are too large for the house so they go into a large, loft garage from early December until March. (Garage faces directly South and 50% of the door panels are glass--also have some fluorescent tubes that put out some light in there.) The garage is minimally heated to keep temps above 32 F. but days average from 45-60 in the dead of winter, still they keep all foliage (undamaged) and do not suffer bud loss. In the past, I had tried to overwinter smaller specimens in the house, but they developed spider mite--like a lot of palms over winter, in the northern homes. While outside they get full sun, all day (something we have not seen in the Northeast for weeks now). I also keep them on the very dry side in the Winter. Hope this was helpful. Good luck! |

| Make sure your palm fertilizer has manganese in it. Queen palms need much more of this than most other palms. They will develop a condition known as "frizzle top" without it. |

| Queen palms seem to be really tollerant of neglect. Ive been giving mine neglect its entire life, and its still growing well. I had is as a seedling about 5 years ago and accidently left it outside well into december. It probably saw 20 degrees on many occassions but it wasnt too cold. I brought it in and it continued to grow. One year I kept it in my garage which is unheated. The garage door is also opened alot during the winter, so is did see 20 degrees, and completely defoliated. Then I repotted it in a pot that held alot of water, and the plant was always flooded. It still grew. Now its about 6 feet tall and stays inside during the winter. I mist mine with water and sometimes a little soap to keep away spider mites. Other then that they seem to make great plants, and love to be fertilized I give mine miracle gro about 1 time a month and soak it really well to reduce salt build up. they also need a hevy pot because the leaves get caought in the wind alot. Good luck |

| Palmmandan -- This was at the HD in Pontiac, Michigan on the border with Bloomfield Township (Telegraph Road at Orchard Lake Road). It was about $36 (was either $35.98 or $36.98, can't remember exactly). Thanks for the information, all. Will make sure it gets micronutrients. Regarding mites, I do know ONE pretty good way to deal with them on indoor plants, like palms, citrus, etc. Before I bring them in for the fall, I spray the plants down thoroughly, especially the undersides of the leaves, with a 1:5 spray of Wiltpruf and water. Been doing this for years on things, never had it burn anything (but, I don't do certain plants, like ferns or succulents, which are known to burn easily from chemicals), and it really keeps the mites at bay, at least for about four or five months. Smothers them, I guess, or makes it too slippery for the survivors or something. It also makes the plants shiny looking and attractive, and helps to keep them from drying out so fast. |

| Denninmi- Thanks for the heads up on those queens. I went and picked one up today. Definitely a very nice buy for $36. They still have one left if anybody else wants one. Not to mention some nice majesties with thick trunks, same size for the same price. Now the only issue is hoping that it doesn't grow too tall to fit in the house in the winter! |

| Islandbreeze - glad to hear that you found one. Yes, they do have some big majesty palms. I bought a 10" pot sized one on Palm Sunday weekend for $8.88, and I'm happy with that, because they grow SO fast. I previously had a majesty that started as a small one, and in about 3 years it got to be too big for me, so I had to give it away. Luckily, I have a stairwell with large, southern and western exposure windows. I have a big avacado tree that overwinters there, and I have just enough room on the landing for both pots, so the two will be companions for the winter. |
