Adonidia Base damage/hole - termites?

AJLJ

While cleaning out the beds yesterday, I noticed a portion of bark separating at the base of my Adonidia Palm. Investigated with a few finger pokes and the pieces fell away to reveal a soft, spongy, sawdust-like degeneration in the base of the tree! (close up pic) I am alarmed and concerned as the tree looks generally healthy outside until this portion of bark fell away.

Is this damage from termites or some kind of fungal infection?!

Has anyone seen this before? Can I treat this myself or should I be calling a palm tree service co. to investigate?
