A wider planter looks needed - plastic may be more durable, but don't over water if using plastic because its a dessert plant. The plant is also pushing outward and out-growing the planter - its rot and a giant heavy plant combonation. You could take 2 feet off the top.

When you talk about cutting some of the height off, should i wait till later in the year or is anytime okay?

Beautiful plant! I wouldnt do anything to the height! The worst case senario is that the top leaves get messed up a little bit when it goes indoors for the year and those leaves will grow back in the summer.
You should prune some of the oldest leaves to give it a more open look, but I wouldnt do anything more than that as far as pruning goes.
