Just scored three Dypsis Decipiens

| So after a long time of indecision by my part, I finally cracked and visited a palm nursery here in central CA. I had already gone online to see their prices and had set my eyes on two dypsis decipiens for $25 a piece. I went down there last friday and upon talking to the owner, he said they were no longer that price. He said he'd give them to me for $15 a piece. Long story short, I gave him forty dollars for two, but because he didn't have 10 in change, he told me to take three for the $40! woo! that's about $13 a piece. Score. These are in two gallon containers and he said he germinated them in 1998, that makes them 11 years old from seed! wow, they definately are slow growers when grown in pots. He showed me one that was much larger that was in the ground. These babies will hit the ground soon.

| What a SUPER SCORE! Those are some real beauties at an un-real price. Keep us updated on the lives of these palms. With pics on where they get planted and how fast they take off when put in the ground. I hope your digging some holes right now! Thanks for sharing. |

| That is a great score! They will appreciate the heat you get. I have a soft spot in my heart for this palm. I hope they do really well for you. For a glimpse at their future, here is a young one in a garden outside Antananarivo:
These are the parents in the same garden:

When you cross a royal with a bottle.. What nursery in the central valley carries them? wow,You should have bought all of them-for trade or resell at a profit. That was a great deal and are going to be an anchor of a superior exotic valley garden-congrats. |

| Thanks, I really couldn't believe how cheap they were. He had at least some 50 or more in 2 gallon containers and an equal number in 5 gallon containers. Bestdank, I am already envisioning where I will be planting them. I want to put one in front of the house facing the street, but my tiny front yard is already somewhat crowded! haha. I have four queens, a majesty, butia capitata, yucca guatemalensis, australian tree fern, Aloe Marlothii, kentia and a young king palm. The king palm will likely not get very big before it's wiped out by a freeze and the majesty will likely not be a long term palm as well. I'll find a place somewhere! haha. Catkim, Those are some real beauties! I really love that silver coloring on the first picture. And that trio looks tempting! Stan, It's Nickel Palm Nursery near Bakersfield. They carry a ton of palms, everything that can grow in the valley floor. He has actually been through some tough sales moments so he said he had to sell several of his specimen palms for his nursery's survival. He told me within this last year he dug and sold a giant Jubaea and several large palms. This year sales have picked up for him. If I had the capital, I'd have bought them all! haha |

| If I planted seeds of sunflowers in 1998,your not getting them for less than $150. Thats a whole lot of watering and care for a very long time... |

| Stan - The photos are taken in Madagascar, a rather unlikely place to find Monterey pines. But, I do not know a THING about pines! : ) More likely some sort of tropical pine is my guess. |

I should have been more specific,I was wondering if they were our natives being invasive, planted, that kind of thing.OR is D.decipiens not a low elevation palm?..more a cloudforest palm of what altitude? It's a palm that looks very tropical..but in a way,so does Butia. |
