Looks good wx,my Washys did not make it through the spring to good,I lost all but one, mostly from root damage from not mulching far enough out around them and to wet of soil this spring. One of my Washys is holding on but has not grown at all.I have planted one more Washy and a Butia Eriospatha which is now beginning to grow(it was planted out a little to early)and should recover nicely.
You really did a nice job getting your palms through the winter(esp the Washys)with minimal damage!Whats the one with the large pinnate leaves and did any of your Basjoos come back?

Hey Jim,

The large pinnate leaf palm is a Majesty Palm. $4.99 Home Depot special!! I'm using it as an annual. None of my musa basjoos came back. They all rotted I believe from the cold wet winter and cold wet spring. I planted orinocos out this year which are easier to overwinter in basements. I can't believe your washies didn't make it. I have to tell you, I believe it has something to do with them having "air space" around the palm and getting light. My trachy had ZERO damage, and my washy virtually had ZERO damage. The only one that got damage was the one that saw 19F in the backyard due to GFI failure. You remember my enclosures, right? I think giving them a steady dose of light all winter really makes all the difference. I don't have faith in keeping palms "in the dark". Why not try to build something like I had for your washy this winter and see if the "air space" and "light" helps?

Only thing I'm changing this year is I'm putting foam board on the N, W, E exposures, and I'll leave the south exposure plastic to let light in.

Yea, your stuff(protection) worked great for sure.Maybe I wasn't clear-My Washys did not have enough mulch around them, so,this led to the roots suffering a little, this combined with a leaky gutter/wet spring caused the spears to pull. The Washys actually made it through winter and were greening up,the 2 under the leak went fairly fast and the one away from it a little, is still green with no spear pull.
