Mexican Fan Palm Questions again

I have asked many questions on here about my plam trees and after a while they are looking a lot better. But i am just wondering, why is it that my little 1 ft mexican fan palm has 5 leaves and my little bigger 4 ft one only has 3? My little one has 2 new fronds right now coming out, while my big one has one. Also, my little ones fronds are all nice and green and no bent. But my bigger one has kind of greenish-yellowish fronds(but the new fronds are nice green)and its fronds are all bent except one. They are both in the same place on my deck in pots. The oldest frond on my big palm tree is the only non-bent one.

O and also when can you tell its time to transplant a palm while its in a pot? ANd one more question, How much would u estimate a mexican fan palm will grow each year being in Minnesota and in a pot? O and how long does it take for a single frond to grow? it seems like months.

Idk how but i am having more luck growing my majesty palm.

Hi. I don't know anything about growing palms in Minnesota, but I will try to answer your questions as best I can.

About the 1 ft and 4 ft palms -- are the pots sized proportionately? If not, maybe the taller palm needs a larger pot? The greenish-yellow fronds on the taller palm may be reaching the normal end of their life cycle. How old are they? If you are doing well with your majesty but having trouble with the Washingtonia, I suspect overwatering -- majesties love water, while washies live in dry areas and do not like wet feet, and too much water can cause leaves to yellow and die.

If the roots of a palm are growing out the holes in the bottom of the pot, it is probably ready for a larger pot. To be sure, slip the rootball out of the pot and look at it.

I can't say how much these palms will grow in Minnesota, and the speed of the frond production will vary with conditions. Placed in all-day sun, they are quite fast.

Hope that was at least a little helpful.
