Help with a palm plant in a container

Hi all,

Long story short, my roommates and I inherited an outdoor patio container garden from a previous tenant. Out of respect to our landlord and all the work the previous tenant put in, we've been doing our best to upkeep the plants.

We have two palm tree type plants in containers (see picture) that have just not done very well over the last year. The leaves are constantly turning brown and desiccated, and I've had to remove entire fronds once they've gone all brown.

My roommates and I have no experience with gardening, and I was wondering if someone could offer some explanations on what we might be doing wrong.

Currently:
-Watering is done mostly on a drip irrigation system that automatically runs twice a day for a total of about 15 minutes/day. We also tried watering them significantly every day for a while, but that didn't seem to help.
-We live in SF so temperature holds in the 50-80 F for the most part.
-We tried resoiling the plants with some palm tree fertilizer mix about 3 months ago; we're not sure if it helped at all.

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!
