Base of palm tree covered in dirt?

Hello! I want to build a planter in a (semi) open area. The catch is, there is a palm tree growing right in the middle of it. I do not know what type of palm it is, but is grows a ton of the little orange berries that flies seem to love so much (very specific, I know...).

I am thinking of building a rectangular planter there that would cover the base of the palm tree in approximately 3 ft of dirt. My question is, would this kill the tree through rot or insects or whatever else, or would it be just fine with the base covered? If anyone thinks this isn't a good idea, please let me know and I'll build more of an L or U shaped planter around it to keep the base free...
